Features and Uses of  EN8

A plain carbon steel suitable for use where a good degree wear resistance combined with toughness is required but without the expense of an alloy steel.

Typical applications of EN8 include base plates for tools in plastic moulding and pressure casting dies, components for hand tools.

Available Forms

Working and Heat Treatment

Forging

Forge within the range 850/1100° C

Normalise

Normalise at a temperature of between 830/860°C

Annealing

Slow furnace cool from 680/710°C

Stress Relieving

Stress relieve between 600/650°C

Hardening

Harden by quenching in water from a temperature of 800/830°C or oil from 830/860°C

Tempering

Temper  according to the requirements of the job and by reference to the tempering curve. Soak for 30 minutes at the tempering temperature. Where possible, use an air-circulating furnace.
