Features and Uses of 1.2162
A general purpose, case hardening, plastic mold steel similar to AISI P2 with
good through hardening properties. suitable for cold hobing and able to take
hold a good polished finish and
Available Forms
Working and Heat Treatment
Forging
Forge between 950/1050°C. Do not work this steel below 850°C slow
cool.
Annealing
Slow furnace cool from 830/860°C to give hardness of 210 HB max.
Stress Relieving
Where machining operations have been severe stress relieving at 650/680°C is
recommended. The material should be allowed to soak thoroughly and slow cooled.
Hardening
Harden from 800°C and quench in oil or a hot salt bath at 180/200°C. A
pre-heat at 350°C is recomended for large or complicated sections.
Temper after hardening.
Tempering
Select the appropriate temperature according to requirements of the job from
the tempering graph soak for 2 hours minimum and cool in still air.

Carburising
In order to achieve maximum surface hardness 1.2162 may be case hardened by
pack carburising.
Seal the items to be carburised into a suitable contained along with
carburising powder, heat to 870/900°C and allow to soak to give the required
depth of case. Cool to 800/820°C and quench in oil. Reheat to 200/300°C and
allow to cool in air to give a final surface hardness of 55/59 HRC |
